Overview

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliating treatment. A handheld device removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, which reveals the smoother, brighter skin sitting underneath and softens the look of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars and uneven tone. Because it works only on the top layer of the skin, recovery is quick and there is no real downtime.

There are two methods and we offer both. Crystal-based microdermabrasion directs fine crystals at the skin and vacuums them away together with the loosened dead skin cells. Diamond-tipped microdermabrasion uses a wand with an abrasive diamond surface to do the same work without crystals. Both are effective, and which one suits you comes down to your skin type and what you are treating. Your esthetician will make that call with you at the consultation.

Your Visit

Preparation & Aftercare

Before Your Visit

  • Stop retinoids and acids about a week before. Recent retinoid use is a reason to postpone, so tell us if you have been using one.
  • Come off recent sun. No sunbathing and no self tan beforehand. Exfoliation is not performed on tanned or burnt skin.
  • Tell us your skin history. Cold sores, eczema, psoriasis, skin that scars easily, or isotretinoin now or in the past.
  • Leave time before a big event. Redness and small pinpoint marks can show afterwards, so book well clear of a wedding or a shoot.

What to Expect

Your esthetician assesses your skin first and chooses between the crystal and diamond-tip method based on what they find. The device then passes across the skin, exfoliating as it goes. Most clients describe it as a gentle massage rather than anything uncomfortable, and the whole session runs from half an hour to an hour depending on the area being treated.

Aftercare

  • Wear sunscreen. Freshly exfoliated skin is more exposed than usual.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure while the skin settles.
  • Apply a moisturizer at home if your esthetician recommends one.
  • Mild redness and a light sunburn sensation are normal and settle on their own.

Recovery & Results

There is no recovery period. Because microdermabrasion works only on the top layer of the skin, most people go straight back to their day. Expect a pink flush and possibly a mild sunburn sensation, which typically settles within a few hours and has faded within about a day. Skin usually feels smoother and looks brighter immediately, and the improvement builds over the following days. Best results come from a course rather than a single visit, with sessions commonly spaced a week or two apart, and your esthetician will set the schedule that fits your skin.

Your Questions

Frequently Asked

What is a microdermabrasion facial?

A non-invasive cosmetic treatment that gently exfoliates the skin to remove the superficial layer of dead skin cells. It uses either fine crystals or an abrasive diamond-tipped wand, which leaves the skin smoother and more radiant.

Who is a good candidate for microdermabrasion?

It suits all skin types and is a good fit if you want to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, minimize acne scars or brighten your overall complexion. It may not be appropriate if you have certain skin conditions such as active acne or eczema, which is why we assess your skin at a consultation first.

How long does a microdermabrasion session take?

Between thirty minutes and an hour, depending on your skin and the area being treated. It is often called a lunchtime facial for exactly that reason.

What can I expect after a microdermabrasion treatment?

Mild redness and a sensation similar to a light sunburn, which usually settles within a few hours. Most clients notice their skin feels smoother and looks brighter straight away. Wear sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure afterwards.

How many microdermabrasion treatments will I need?

It depends on your skin type and what you are treating. You may see an improvement after one session, but a course of treatments gives the best result. We build a plan around your skin at the initial consultation.

What is the difference between crystal and diamond-tip microdermabrasion?

Crystal microdermabrasion sprays fine crystals onto the skin and vacuums them away with the dead skin cells. Diamond-tip uses an abrasive diamond-coated wand instead, so no crystals are involved. Both exfoliate effectively, and your esthetician will recommend the one that suits your skin type and concerns.
