Pulses of broad-spectrum light are absorbed by the sun spots, age spots and uneven pigment sitting in your skin, breaking them up so your natural, even tone comes back through. Nothing breaks the surface.

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. A handpiece delivers short bursts of light across a broad range of wavelengths, and that light is absorbed by the areas in your skin that are darker or more discoloured than the skin around them. Sun spots, freckling and areas of built-up pigment take in the energy, break down, and are cleared away by your body over the following days.
People often call it a laser, and it is worth knowing why that is not quite right. A laser produces one single wavelength of light. IPL produces many at once, which is what lets one treatment work across brown pigment and blotchy, sun-aged tone in the same session, over a whole area of skin rather than one spot at a time. Nothing punctures or removes the surface of your skin, which is why most people go straight back to their day afterwards.
At Le-Pelle, IPL is delivered with the Venus Versa system by one of our licensed estheticians. We use it for sun spots, pigmentation, uneven sun-damaged tone and the fine lines that come with sun-aged skin. We do not use it for hair removal or for leg and spider veins.
Breaks down the brown spots and freckling left behind by years of sun exposure.
The light response helps refresh sun-aged skin and soften the look of fine lines and rough texture.
Works across a whole area, so the result is consistent rather than patchy.
The light passes through the surface. No needles and no wound to heal.
A session is short and most people go straight back to normal activity.
Broad-spectrum light treats pigment and blotchy, sun-damaged tone across a whole area in the same session.

You wear protective eyewear, a cool gel goes onto the skin, and the handpiece is moved across the treatment area pulse by pulse. Most people describe each pulse as a quick snap, like a light flick of an elastic band. Your licensed esthetician works through the area methodically and talks you through it as they go.
There is little to no downtime. Most people head straight back to work, and any warmth or pinkness settles within a day or two. The part that surprises people is what happens to the spots themselves. Rather than fading immediately, they usually go darker for several days, taking on a speckled, coffee ground look, before lifting away as your skin renews. That is the treatment working. Results build with each session, which is why IPL is planned as a short course spaced a few weeks apart rather than a one off.
It is a non-invasive light treatment. Pulses of broad-spectrum light are absorbed by the darker or more discoloured areas in your skin, such as sun spots and built-up pigment, which break down and clear over the following days. It is used for sun damage, uneven tone, and the fine lines that come with sun-aged skin.
No, although the two are often confused. A laser emits a single wavelength of light. IPL emits many wavelengths at once, which is what lets one session address brown pigment and uneven tone together, and cover a full area rather than one spot at a time.
There is minimal discomfort. Most people describe each pulse as a quick snap against the skin. Cooling gel is used throughout, and your specialist adjusts the settings to keep you comfortable.
The effect is cumulative, so a course usually runs to between three and six sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Heavier pigmentation tends to need more. Your specialist maps out the course after seeing your skin.
Warmth and a light flush are common and usually settle within a day or two. Treated spots typically darken first and take on a speckled look before flaking away over the following week. There is no significant downtime and most people carry on as normal.
Not equally. IPL works by targeting contrast between pigment and the surrounding skin, so it performs best on fairer skin. On deeper skin tones it needs careful handling and is not always the right choice. Your specialist will assess your skin and tell you straight whether IPL suits you or whether another treatment would serve you better.
