An acne facial is a deep cleansing treatment built around one thing your hands cannot do safely: proper extraction. Your skin is cleansed and softened so the pores release, then blackheads and whiteheads are lifted out using sterile instruments. The skin is calmed and protected afterwards.

It is worth being straight about what this does and does not do. A facial clears congestion, lifts the debris sitting in your pores, and keeps oily, breakout prone skin under better control. It is not a cure for acne. Moderate, severe or cystic acne is a medical condition and needs a dermatologist, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a course of facials that was never going to be enough.

Breakouts often leave dark marks behind once they heal. That is a pigmentation problem rather than an acne one, and it is treated differently. If those marks are what bother you most, look at our pigmentation treatment or ask about it at your consultation.

Preparation & Aftercare

Before Your Visit

Do not squeeze anything first. Skin that has been picked at is inflamed and harder to treat safely. Leave it alone in the days before.
Pause your strong actives. Stop retinoids, acids and scrubs a few days beforehand so your skin is not already stripped.
Tell us what you are using. Prescription acne treatment, isotretinoin now or in the past, and any antibiotics all change what is safe to do.
Arrive with clean skin. Come without makeup on the treatment area, or we will cleanse it for you.

What to Expect

Your skin is cleansed and assessed, then softened so the pores give up their contents without force. Extractions are done with sterile tools, and your licensed esthetician works in stages rather than pushing to clear everything in one visit. The skin is calmed and protected at the end, and you leave knowing what to use at home.

Aftercare

Redness where extractions were performed is normal and usually settles the same day.
Leave the skin alone. Picking at anything that surfaces afterwards undoes the point of coming in.
Keep to gentle, non-comedogenic products for a few days.
Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Marks left by breakouts darken in the sun.

Recovery & Results

There is little to no downtime. Expect some redness in the spots that were worked on, settling within hours. Congestion that has built up over months does not always clear in one visit, and that is normal rather than a failed treatment. If your skin has not improved after a few weeks of consistent care, that is the point to see a dermatologist instead of booking more facials.

Will an acne facial clear my acne?

It will clear congestion, blackheads and whiteheads, and it helps keep oily, breakout prone skin under control. It is not a cure for acne. If your acne is moderate, severe or cystic, that is a medical condition and a dermatologist is the right person to treat it.

Why not just squeeze blackheads at home?

Because it goes wrong more often than it goes right. Squeezing pushes some of the contents deeper into the skin, which increases inflammation, and the bacteria on your hands can cause infection. The two outcomes people end up with are permanent scarring and more noticeable acne. Done with sterile instruments by someone trained, extraction is a safe way to remove blackheads and whiteheads.

Does extraction hurt?

You feel pressure, and some spots are more tender than others, particularly around the nose. Your skin is softened first so the pores release more easily, and your specialist works in stages rather than forcing anything.

How soon will I see a difference?

Skin usually looks clearer and feels smoother the same day, once the redness from extractions settles. Congestion built up over months does not all lift in one session, so deeper cases improve across a course rather than in a single visit.

Can I have an acne facial while using prescription acne treatment?

Sometimes, but not always. Retinoids, antibiotics and isotretinoin all change what is safe to do to the skin, and isotretinoin matters even if you took it in the past. Tell us what you are on at your consultation and we will work around it or advise you to wait.

When should I see a dermatologist instead?

If you have been treating your skin at home for around four to six weeks with no improvement, or if your acne is deep, painful or cystic, see a dermatologist. A facial is not the right tool for that, and we would rather tell you than take the booking.
